Juliana was one of the very first bilingual teachers to join Bilingual Bridges! Like all of us, before becoming a teacher, she was a student; and this is the story of her journey as an Italian language learner.
She began learning Italian when working in Italy; however, despite her fluency in both English and Spanish, Italian wasn’t as easy to pick up as she’d anticipated. Juliana shared with us, “When I first landed in Italy, I was very self-conscious and didn’t think I was going to be able to express myself in the language.” With the help of her colleagues and her own eagerness to learn, Juliana’s feelings of self-doubt gradually began to fade.We asked Juliana for one piece of advice that she’d like to share with other language learners, and she responded, “Be patient and don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Always remember that mistakes are just learning opportunities.”
Thank you for your work, Juliana! We are so lucky to have you as one of the bilingual teachers on our team!
Do you recognize yourself in this story? Do you remember a time when you wanted to say something in another language, but in the end, you just sat there… silently? Maybe you were afraid that a sentence wasn’t grammatically correct, or that you might butcher the pronunciation of a word. Next time, just remember Juliana’s advice: “Mistakes are just opportunities to learn!”
